Muslim religious leaders form National Ulama Conference of the Philippines

Two hundred Muslim religious leaders gathered in the Second National Ulama Summit of the Philippines yesterday ratified their bylaws and formed the National Ulama Conference of the Philippines (NUCP) to serve as the vehicle for unity among thousands of Ulama in the country.

The Ulama are Muslim scholars trained in Islam and Islamic law who are the interpreters of Islam’s sciences, doctrines and laws.  The Philippine Council for Islam and Democracy (PCID) and the Magbassa Kita Foundation, Inc (MKFI) are responsible for organizing the summit, with the support of the Embassies of the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

The ulama elected 14, coming from the different sectors of the Muslim communities, to the 15-member interim board of trustees. The PCID has been given the 15th seat on the Board. (more…)

The largest gathering of independent Muslim religious leaders, or ulama, will be held on January 25-29, 2010 during the 3rd  National Ulama Conference of the Philippines (NUCP) and the Regional Conference of Women Peace Advocates (Noor-us Salam, Women of Faith, Light and Peace).

The historic event is the culmination of the formation of the National Ulama Conference of the Philippine (NUCP) into the largest ulama collective in the country—a landmark event that signifies the formation of a CBCP-like conference of independent and imminent Muslim religious leaders for the Muslims in the Philippines. The initiative began 3 years ago, as part of the “Empowering the Ulama Project” implemented by the Philippine Council for Islam and Democracy and supported by the Magbassa Kita Foundation Inc, and the embassies of the United Kingdom and of Netherlands.  The program has also been supported by development organizations such as The Asia Foundation. Dear Ms Villa:

TV Patrol’s coverage of our protest action at the Israeli embassy today was a textbook example of crass sensationalism, of bad journalism.

According to your report, we supposedly threatened to bomb the Israeli embassy. (“Israeli embassy binantaang pasasabugin!”)

Not only does this put one speaker’s statements out of context, it totally mischaracterized the nature and intention of our actions. (more…)

A Muslim solon cried foul to the arguments put forward by national leaders on the contentious Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

In a statement released by the office of Anak Mindanao Representative Mujiv S. Hataman, the legislator reacted to the Privilege Speech of Administration Representative Teddy Boy Locsin, portions of which were reported in the August 6, 2008 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer. (more…)

Moro group opposes Sulu oil exploration

COTABATOCITY – The Suara Bangsamoro (Voice of the Bangsamoro) has express dismay and apprehension on government’s ‘comfort and receptiveness’ stance on the programmed exploration of Exxon Mobil Corporation, a US-based oil firm, in the country.

Department of Energy Secretary Angelo T. Reyes bragged that Exxon Mobil, the world’s largest oil and gas company, is set to explore the rich-sea of Sulu – the home to one of the world heritage sites, Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park, for crude oil deposits this year. (more…)

RTWPB, DOLE confer minimum wage for ARMM

COTABATO CITY – “Except for the Province of Maguindanao, all other areas in the ARMM are no longer members of the poorest provinces and cities in the country,” revealed by Regional Planning and Development Office (RPDO) report during the one-day Public Consultation on Minimum Wage in ARMM on December 11.

Regional Tri-partite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) Chairman and Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Muslimin Jakilan also informed the participants of the economic recovery ARMM has so far achieved particularly in the incumbency of the present administration of Regional Governor Datu Zaldy Uy Ampatuan.

Said consultation is the 3rd of a series with the first and second conducted in Tawi-Tawi and Sulu last November 26 and 29 respectively. Participants came from mainland ARMM particularly Maguindanao, Shariff Kabunsuan and Lanao del Sur. (more…)

ARMM, DepEd convene to end teachers' woe in Zambo

ZAMBOANGA CITY – The regional government of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) cleared once again the issues hounding the unpaid salaries of teachers from the provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi and the city of Lamitan.

ARMM officials led by Attorney-General Atty. Frances Cynthia Guiani-Sayadi and Department of Education (DepEd-ARMM) secretary Udtog Kawit speak to some 300 crowd here on Saturday, December 8.

Governor Ampatuan before he left for Jeddah last Friday instructed Sayadi, Kawit and his Chief of Staff, Ulama Acad to “once and for all resolve the problems of the teachers in the region.”

In the forum, Kawit said, “We have been solving your (teacher’s) problem since we assumed office in 2005; it is about time to clear up everything.” (more…)

ARMM's Inter-Agency Sports Fest, a success; DPWH bags 19 trophies

COTABATO CITY – The five-day Sports Festival spearheaded by the Regional Sports Coordinating Office of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (RSCO-ARMM) was successfully staged on November 20-24, 2007 in celebration of the 18th anniversary of the autonomous region.

RSCO-ARMM Executive Director Vicente O. Ostique exclaimed, “We are so glad that all officials and employees of different agencies showed support for the success of the activity. Aside from providing haven for sports enthusiasts, the festival strengthens more the rapport between officials and employees of the autonomous region.”

The sports festival themed, “Human Discipline, Peace and Social Progress through Sports” was concluded with an awarding ceremony held in Shariff Kabunsuan Sports Complex recently. (more…)

Moro groups hold march-rally on HR day, call for the respect of Bangsamoro's democratic rights

COTABATO CITY – The Suara Bangsamoro organization here stages a march-rally today and calls for the respect of democratic rights of the Bangsamoro people in observance of the 59th Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted and proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948.

Bai Ali Indayla, the group’s national secretary-general said, “Despite various agreements and declarations on human rights around the world, violations continue to persist and the Bangsamoro people were not spared to such abuses.”

“Under Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s administration, the Bangsamoro people suffer almost all forms of human rights violations. Men, women and children are victims of terrorist tagging, bombing suspects, massive evacuations, strafing, abduction, torture and many other human rights violations,” Indayla enumerated. (more…)

ARMM creates TWG for GRP-MNLF '5 Issues of Concern'

COTABATO CITY – The Office of Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPPAP) meets the officials of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) on December 05, 2007 to discuss the implementation of propositions in the recently concluded tripartite talks of the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP), Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Highlight of the talks is the creation of five (5) joint working groups that will reaffirm GRP-MNLF full commitment to the success of the peace process in Southern Philippines. Each joint working group will be composed of three (3) experts from GRP and MNLF while the OIC Peace Committee for Southern Philippines will serve as facilitators for the meetings. (more…)
