The feeling of having distinct identity and culture reinforces the political consciousness of being separate from the Filipinos. Historical documents show that the Bangsamoro people have distinct identity. This was the reason why the US organized the Moro Province as a separate administrative unit to administer the Bangsamoro territories.

The Mindanao Independent Movement (MIM) manifesto asserts that the Muslims culture and history are distinct from the Filipinos. That feeling of separateness is still strong until now as we can read in placards and streamers during rallies and demonstrations saying, We are not Filipinos, we are Bangsamoro.

Even the Philippine government acknowledges their distinct identity. The Tripoli Agreement on Peace of 2001 in several occasions refers to the Muslim inhabitants of Mindanao, Sulu – Tawi-Tawi archipelago and the islands of Basilan and Palawan as Bangsamoro people and they occupy a definite territory referred to in the document as Bangsamoro homeland. This was a total departure from the usual reference as ‘Muslim Filipinos’ or ‘Muslims in the Philippines’, and Southern Philippines when referring to their place of domicile.

Bill of Rights

This one reason i react about Moro Muslims == Filipino Muslims ?  and reasserting once again my identity as a Moro and i don’t consider myself as Filipino. But friends ask me that in my birth certificate or records in school my nationality was Filipino, we Moros are immorally and illegally annexed and colonized by the Filipino Government this is the reason why are fighting for our Independence. Someday in the near future Inshallah (If God wills) i can freely have my nationality as a Bangsamoro.

I’m so proud of being Moro since my ancestors and great grandfathers was a Sultan sa Masiu part of The Pat a Pangampong ko Ranao (Confederation of the Four Lake- based Emirates) ruled the interior parts of Lanao del Sur, Lanao del Norte, and parts of Bukidnon, Agusan, and eastern and western Misamis provinces. My ancestors defended the land against the  spaniards, americans, japanese and now filipinos, we the young generation must continue the fight and not put the waste their sacrifices and bloods.
